A job as a mystery shopper (aka secret shopper) has become a popular source of income for the work-at-home mom who enjoys shopping. Enjoy the flexibility of working when you want – with the added benefit of shopping while you do so.
Acting as a ‘regular shopper’ at various retail establishments, restaurants, and service oriented companies, a mystery shopper should have the ability to be discreet and pay attention to details. Act as a regular shopper and utilize your smart phone to keep track of items and to make notes. The idea is to pose as a regular patron of the establishment and gather the required information. You should use your best judgement before accepting a “shop”, as the amount of pay may not equal the amount of work involved. This make take a bit of trial and error to figure out, but you’ll get the hang of it after a few jobs.
Some companies may require you to make a purchase. Before doing so, ensure you will be reimbursed. You don’t want to get stuck with the bill, after all. Many seasoned mystery shoppers believe that certification shows you’re serious about this line of work/ Although not necessary, being certified may provide higher paying jobs. To get certified, go here. I believe the cost is $15.00. I am not certified, nor do I think I ever will be, and I have had enough jobs to pay a few bills. The choice is all up to you.
Work is not provided on a regular basis, and payment may be in the form of an hourly wage or reimbursement of an item or meal with a small dollar amount included. You have the right to decline any mystery shopping assignment.
