Medical Billing is the practice of submitting claims to Insurance companies or the United States government, specifically medicare, in order to receive payment for services provided to a patient by a doctor. Typical medical billers will work in an office environment, in an area separate from the customers associated with a medical ofice. While many physician's offices prefer to have "on-site" medical billers, the ability to work at home increases when a medical biller is certified in the field. Certification can be obtained from The American Health Information Management Association.

Medical Coding is the process of assigning specific codes to a physician's diagnosis. This is essential for the payment from insurance companies and government agencies for services performed by a physician.
